Finding more hair on your pillow, in the shower or on your comb can be worrying. Some shedding is normal: most people lose around 50 to 100 hairs a day. But if you notice thinning, a widening parting or a receding hairline, it is worth looking for the cause. In this article we explain the common reasons for hair fall, how Ayurveda understands it, and the diet and scalp care habits that can help your hair fall treatment in ayurveda.
8 common causes of hair fall
- Stress: long-term physical or mental stress can push many hairs into the shedding phase.
- Nutritional gaps: low iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12 or protein can weaken hair.
- Thyroid problems: both an underactive and an overactive thyroid can cause hair thinning. Read more in our thyroid diet guide.
- Hormonal changes: PCOD/PCOS, pregnancy, childbirth and menopause can all affect hair growth.
- Genetics: pattern baldness runs in families and is a very common cause in men.
- Scalp conditions: dandruff, fungal infection or scalp inflammation can increase hair fall.
- Harsh hair care: frequent colouring, straightening, heat styling and strong chemical products.
- Illness, crash diets and some medicines: fever, major illness, rapid weight loss or certain drugs may lead to temporary heavy shedding a few months later.
How Ayurveda looks at hair fall (Khalitya)
In Ayurveda, hair loss is described as Khalitya. Hair is considered a by-product of healthy bone tissue (asthi dhatu), and classical texts link hair fall with aggravated pitta (heat and inflammation) and vata (dryness), along with poor digestion, stress and an irregular lifestyle. That is why Ayurvedic care looks beyond the scalp and checks your digestion, sleep, stress levels and diet as well.
Scalp care habits that may help
- Oil massage: gently massage the scalp 1 to 2 times a week with a light oil such as coconut oil or a herbal oil recommended by your vaidya. Commonly used herbs include bhringraj, amla and brahmi, although scientific evidence is still limited.
- Wash regularly: use a mild shampoo two to three times a week. Do not leave oil on for days, as this can worsen dandruff.
- Avoid very hot water and limit heat styling and chemical treatments.
- Be gentle: do not comb wet hair roughly, and avoid very tight hairstyles.
- Treat dandruff early because a flaky, itchy scalp can add to hair fall.
Diet for healthier hair
- Include protein at every meal: dal, paneer, curd, eggs, sprouts, nuts and seeds.
- Eat iron-rich foods such as spinach, beetroot, dates, jaggery in small amounts and pulses, along with vitamin C foods like amla and lemon.
- Add healthy fats from nuts, flaxseed and walnuts.
- Drink enough water and limit sugary drinks, junk food and excess tea or coffee.
- Do not follow crash diets. Fast weight loss often leads to more hair fall.
Lifestyle changes that matter
- Sleep 7 to 8 hours at a fixed time every night.
- Practise stress control with pranayama, meditation or yoga. Our guide on Ayurvedic remedies for anxiety and stress can help you start.
- Exercise regularly to improve circulation and manage stress.
- Avoid smoking and excess alcohol.
When to see a doctor
Please consult a doctor if you have sudden or patchy hair loss, an itchy, painful or red scalp, hair fall along with fatigue, weight change, irregular periods or other symptoms, or if the shedding continues for more than two to three months. Blood tests such as haemoglobin, ferritin, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and thyroid profile can help find the cause.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How much hair fall is normal?
Losing about 50 to 100 hairs a day is considered normal. More than this, or visible thinning, should be looked into.
Can hair fall be treated with Ayurveda?
Ayurveda aims to address the root cause, such as stress, digestion and nutrition, through herbs, diet and scalp care. Results differ from person to person and depend on the cause.
Does oiling really stop hair fall?
Oiling can reduce dryness and breakage and relax the scalp, but it does not cure hair loss that is caused by hormones, genetics or deficiencies.
Which vitamin deficiency causes hair fall?
Low iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and protein are commonly linked with hair fall. A blood test can confirm this.
How long does it take to see a difference?
Hair grows slowly, so it usually takes at least 3 to 6 months of consistent care to notice a change.
